The Roche limit is the distance from a celestial body within which a second, orbiting body would disintegrate due to tidal forces. Every year, Phobos, a moon of Mars, gets about two centimeters closer to the planet. They call it orbital decay. That gravity will tear it apart is both expected and inevitable.
Phobos is the personification of fear. Can it watch the ever-closing gap, feel itself slipping closer, envy the freedom of the comets while it is stuck in a revolution of decay? Can Phobos fear its own demise?
